Chip varistors are voltage limiting protection devices. Using the non-linear characteristics of chip varistors, when overvoltage occurs between the two poles of the chip varistors, the chip varistors can clamp the voltage to a relatively fixed voltage value to realize the protection of the subsequent circuit. The main parameters of chip varistors are: varistor voltage, flow capacity, junction capacitance, response time, etc.
The response time of the chip varistor is ns level, which is faster than the gas discharge tube and a bit slower than the TVS tube. It is generally used for overvoltage protection of electronic circuits, and its response speed can meet the requirements. The junction capacitors of chip varistors are generally in the range of hundreds to thousands of Pf, and should not be directly applied to the protection of high-frequency signal lines. When applied to the protection of AC circuits, the junction capacitors will increase the leakage current. Therefore, it needs to be fully considered when designing the protection circuit. SMD varistors have a large flow capacity, but are smaller than gas discharge tubes. SMD varistor, referred to as VDR, is a voltage-sensitive non-linear overvoltage protection semiconductor component.
